The HRSMC PhD Mobility Program aims to support and enhance high-quality research within the HRSMC. The program funds visits by HRSMC-affiliated PhD students to outstanding foreign research groups to conduct research there.

The HRSMC strongly welcomes applications that:

  • Demonstrate that the proposed research cannot be conducted within one of the HRSMC-affiliated research groups.
  • Are directed toward fundamental research, rather than application-driven research.

What can be applied for:

Visits to outstanding foreign research groups, ranging from a minimum of 1 week to a maximum of 6 months, are supported. Grants can be requested to help cover the costs of subsistence and travel. The following rates apply:

Subsistence costs:

€1000 per month.

Travel costs:

The maximum grant amount depends on the country where the research is conducted. For research in Europe, the maximum is €500; for research outside Europe, the maximum is €1,500 (based on the cost of second-class rail or tourist-class air travel). No compensation is provided for consumables or other research costs.

Who can apply?

PhD students who are members of the HRSMC and are not yet in the final half year of their PhD contract.

Applications involving staff members from two or more different research groups will be given higher priority for funding (if other aspects are comparable).

Applications can be submitted twice a year, before April 1 and before October 1 and should be sent to hrsmc-science@uva.nl.

After approval, the visit should begin within one year of the approval date, and the last day of the visit should fall within the duration of the PhD contract.
